IPL and the awards associated with it always gather the attention of the fans. One such award is the Orange Cap, which is given to the high scorer of the team. What is the IPL Orange Cap?

Orange Cap is an award of the IPL (Indian Premier League). This award is given to the top scorer of the tournament. Each year this award is given to the player who tops the chart of highest scorer at the end of the event. The award was first given in 2008 (inaugural season) and it is never discontinued. The winner of the orange cap receives a trophy along with a cash prize of INR 15 lakh.

2008 – Shaun Marsh (Kings XI Punjab)

In the first season of IPL was won by Rajasthan, but this player of Punjab bagged the Orange Cap. Shaun Marsh scored 616 runs in the season’s 11 games he played. His strike rate was 139.68 in the season. He was the main reason that his team finished 2nd on the points table after all league matches.

2009 – Matthew Hayden (Chennai Super Kings)

In 2009, another Australian won this cap. This time it was Matthew Hayden. He made 572 runs in the 12 games he played.

2010 – Sachin Tendulkar (Mumbai Indians)

In 2010, the God of Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar, won this cap. He scored 618 runs in 15 games of the season, including a century. This performance helped his team to reach finals.

2011 – Chris Gayle (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Then came Chris Gayle. And when he comes, you know what happens. Sixes, sixes, and more sixes! He smashed 608 runs in just 12 matches and hit massive centuries. Bowlers had no idea what to do against him.

2012 – Chris Gayle (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

The universal boss won it again in 2012. He was the only player in the history of IPL to win this award back to back seasons. He made 733 runs in 15 games of the season.

2013 – Michael Hussey (Chennai Super Kings)

This year, it was Michael Hussey. He won this cap after scoring 733 runs in 17 matches. His performance lead his team to qualify for finals.

2014 – Robin Uthappa (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Now, this one was special. Robin Uthappa not only won the cap, but also his team KKR lifted the IPL trophy. He was the first player to win Orange Cap whose team also won the IPL trophy. He scored 660 runs in 16 matches and gave solid starts every time.

2015 – David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

2015 Season was only of David Warner. This guy just loves scoring runs! He got 562 runs in 14 matches and was a big reason SRH was doing well.

2016 – Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Virat Kohli went totally crazy in 2016. 973 runs in 16 matches including 4 centuries. No one has ever done this before or after in IPL history. He was just playing at another level in 2016.

2017 – David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Warner secured another Orange Cap of IPL making 641 runs in 14 matches. It was the second time he won this cap.

2018 – Kane Williamson (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

This year, the calm and cool Kane Williamson won it. 735 runs in 17 matches! He showed that even without being a power hitter, you can dominate with proper batting.

2019 – David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Again Warner! Third time! After missing IPL 2018, he came back and boom – 692 runs in 12 matches. Like, he didn’t even need time to get back in form.

2020 – KL Rahul (Kings XI Punjab)

Now KL Rahul took over. He played really well that season, making 670 runs in 14 matches. He was stylish, consistent, and just timing the ball beautifully in the 2020 season.

2021 – Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings)

And then a young player did it! Ruturaj Gaikwad, who no one expected, scored 635 runs in 16 matches and helped CSK win the IPL.

2022 – Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals)

Now this was total domination. Jos Buttler just went crazy in 2022. 863 runs in 17 matches, and he hit 4 centuries too. He was scoring for fun, however he could not beat Virat’s record. 

2023 – Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans)

Shubman Gill won the 2023 orange cap. He scored 890 runs in 17 matches. At one time he had the chance to beat Virat’s record of 2016, but he could not.

2024 – Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

After 2016, Virat won the cap again. In the last IPL season, he scored 741 runs in just 15 games. He strike rate was above 154 while scoring these runs.

Who Can Win The IPL 2025 Orange Cap?

There are many big and also young talents participating in the IPL 2025. It will be tough to predict the winner of the Orange Cap so soon. However, some of the top content can win this cap. His first name is Virat Kohli, he made the highest runs in the 2024 edition. He is a dangerous player in IPL and if he opens again, there is a chance that he can win the orange cap. Apart from him, the deadly opener of SRH, Travis Head, can also win this cap. He had played big innings on multiple occasions and if he continues in the same form as in 2024, then he will surely named this year’s orange cap. Captain of GT, Shubman Gill and Captain of CSK, Gaikwad are also the top contenders to win the cap.
