Rohit Ends His Test Career After England Tour Talks
It’s finally official, our Hitman Rohit Sharma has said goodbye to the longest format of cricket. The Indian captain has announced his retirement from Test cricket through his Instagram story. It’s really an emotional moment for fans who loved seeing him in whites.
Rohit wrote, “Hello everyone I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”
This decision came right after so many talks were going on that selectors were not looking at him as captain for England test tour. Looks like Rohit doesn’t want to drag things and chooses to step down silently from this format.
Why Rohit Took This Decision?
In recent times, his test form was not that great. Especially after becoming captain, India lost both away and home test series. First against Australia, then New Zealand. Which is really rare for the Indian side, who are always strong at home. Maybe selectors had already decided to try someone else for the new WTC cycle, and Rohit understood it before they made it public.
Even Gautam Gambhir, the coach of Indian Team, had said earlier that his future selection will be selectors’ call, not mine. So maybe all these things made it clear for Rohit that he will not be leading in next test series and it’s better to say goodbye on his own terms.
Also, batting-wise too he was not consistent in the last few series. In some matches, he gave a good start but couldn’t convert. And fans were missing that old Rohit touch in the test.
Though just a few weeks before, he said in an interview that he is preparing to lead in England tour. So maybe after talking with BCCI and management, he changed his mind and made the decision.

Rohit Sharma’s Test Journey
Rohit’s journey in test cricket was not smooth. He was selected in the test squad during South Africa tour in 2010 but didn’t get a chance to play. The injury and competition kept him away for a long time. Finally, in 2013, he made his debut in Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell series.
That debut was memorable. Batting at number 6, he scored a brilliant century and helped India recover from a tough position. He also scored another century in the second test of the same series and got the Player of the Series award.
But after that, he was in and out of the test side, mostly playing in the middle order but didn’t perform consistently. Many thought his test career would end there. But then came the turning point – in 2019, he was promoted as opener in the South Africa series, and he nailed it. He scored centuries in both innings and even smashed a double hundred. That series gave him new life in test format.
From 2021, he became a regular part of the team and one of the few batters performing overseas. In the England series, he scored valuable runs and made his place permanent.
In 2022, after Kohli stepped down, Rohit became the full-time test captain. The first series against Sri Lanka was a smooth win. He also took India to the WTC 2023 Final. But after that form dipped. The team lost two back-to-back series, and fans started questioning his leadership.
And now, with no place as captain and questions on form, he has stepped down from test cricket.
What’s Next for Rohit?
Rohit already retired from T20I after winning the World Cup 2024. Now, after the test exit, he will fully focus on ODIs. Maybe his goal is now the World Cup 2027, which could be his last ICC event. ODI has always been his favourite format, and we have seen his best innings in it. So don’t be surprised if he breaks more records here.
Whatever happens next, one thing is clear – Rohit Sharma’s contribution to Indian cricket is huge. From being a talented guy who took time to settle, to becoming captain in all formats, he had seen everything. And test retirement is just a chapter close, not the full story.
