The 5 time winner of IPL, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a very rough season in this season. First, the captain of the team and the star batter, Ruturaj Gaikwad got injured and ruled out from the league. The team could not find the perfect balance and keep on losing the games after this. Now, they are already eliminated for play-offs after losing 9 games from 11.

Even though they’re out of the playoff race, CSK still has 3 matches to go. The team now wants to finish on a high note and also figure out which players to retain for the next season. So they’re giving chances to fresh talent.

To test a new player, CSK has brought in uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel in place of Vansh Bedi, who is out due to an ankle injury. Vansh didn’t get to play a single match this season. Urvil, now gets the opportunity to prove himself in the biggest cricket league of the world.

Who is Urvil Patel?

Urvil Patel plays domestic cricket for Gujarat. In 2023, he was picked by Gujarat Giants during the IPL 2025 auction but didn’t play even one match. In the 2025 mega auction, his name was listed again with a base price of ₹30 lakh, but he remained unsold.

28 Ball Century Record

He didn’t give up after being unsold in the mega auction. In fact, the very next day after the auction, he made headlines by smashing a 28-ball century against Tripura in Indore. It was the fastest T20 century by any Indian so far. And he didn’t stop there — later in the tournament, he hit another century in just 36 balls.

In this year’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the player had scored 315 runs in just 6 innings he played. In this tournament he average was 78.75 while the strike rate was 230. He also hit 29 sixes in the tournament. His team Gujarat could not qualify for the knockout stage, but he has grabbed everyone’s attention with his performance.

Due to his red-hot form, CSK had even called him for trials in the middle of the season, but he didn’t make the cut back then. Now, with Vansh Bedi ruled out, CSK has finally included him in the squad.

Till now, Urvil has played 47 T20 matches, scoring over 1160 runs at a strike rate of 170+ — not bad at all for an uncapped player.

Will He Get A Chance In The Remaining Matches?

It will be interesting to see if CSK gives him a chance in their remaining games. The season may not have gone their way, but Urvil Patel could be the surprise new hero. With the kind of hitting form he’s in, fans are excited to see what he brings in CSK colours. Let’s hope we get to see this 28-ball century man light up the stadiums soon.
