Asia Cup 2025: Know the Expected Dates, Format & Venue

Indian team celebrating with the Asia Cup trophy, used for a blog about Asia Cup 2025 potential dates and hosting updates.

Looks like cricket fans are in for a treat this September. The reports are saying that much awaited tournament of the year, Asia Cup 2025, is going to take place from September 5, while it will end on September 21. The matches of this tournament can be played in the UAE; however, nothing is officially confirmed yet.

The biggest talking point of this tournament is the match of rivals— India vs Pakistan clash.  It is reported that both teams can face twice in the tournament. The first encounter is expected to be on September 7 in the group stage. And if both teams qualify, again in the Super Four round on September 14. And if all goes as expected, maybe even a final on September 21. Three chances to see the biggest rivals face off.

Why is the UAE Hosting the Asia Cup?

Originally, this tournament was to be hosted by India. But due to the ongoing issues between India and Pakistan — political tensions and no clear agreement — the ACC has decided to shift the tournament to the UAE. This has happened earlier as well.

Recently, in the 2025 Champions Trophy, India’s matches were held at neutral venues. The reason is mostly security concerns and government-level approvals, which take time and come with restrictions. With recent incidents around the borders and ongoing situations in Jammu & Kashmir, both boards have agreed that the UAE is a safer and neutral choice.

The UAE has hosted many tournaments in the past, including big ICC events and league matches. So overall, it’s a practical and trusted option.

Asia Cup 2025 Format and Teams

This time again, the Asia Cup will be played in the T20 format, just like before. A total of 6 teams are participating this year:

  • India
  • Pakistan
  • Sri Lanka
  • Bangladesh
  • Afghanistan
  • UAE

Format will be the same — group stage first, then Super Four, and then the final match. Here’s how the India vs Pakistan matches are expected to line up:

MatchDateStage
1Sept 7Group Stage
2Sept 14Super Four
3Sept 21Final (If qualify)

Approvals and Promotions Already Started

According to some of the inside reports, the cricket boards of both nations (India and Pakistan) are close to getting the approvals from their respective governments. It is expected to be all clear for this tournament in the upcoming weeks.

On other side, Sony Sports, which is the broadcasting partner, has already started promotions on digital and TV. That itself is a big sign that the tournament will go on as planned. Usually, broadcasters don’t begin promotions unless there’s some level of certainty.

Past Asia Cup Winners

India has won the title of Asia Cup most number of times. Here are the top winners of this title:

TeamTitles Won

Sri Lanka6
Pakistan2

India clearly leads the pack with 8 titles since the Asia Cup started way back in 1984. It’s been one of the most consistent teams in this tournament.

Future Asia Cup Hosting Plan

ACC has also shared some updates about future editions:

  • 2027 – Pakistan (ODI Format)
  • 2029 – Bangladesh
  • 2031 – Sri Lanka

So they have already mapped out who’s going to host the tournament for the next few years.

Why So Much Hype Around India vs Pakistan?

Now this question doesn’t need much explaining, but still — the main reason for the hype is that India and Pakistan don’t play bilateral series anymore. The last time both sides had a proper tour was back in 2012-13. After that, they’ve only faced each other in big tournaments like the ICC or the Asia Cup.

Whenever these two teams meet, it becomes a big event. From fans to brands to TV networks — everyone gets involved. Social media gets flooded, tickets get sold in minutes, and every over becomes a moment.

Their last meeting was in the 2025 Champions Trophy, where again India’s matches were in the UAE, and they even won that tournament. So clearly, fans are waiting to see what happens this time.

Women’s Cricket and Hybrid Hosting

Interestingly, not just men’s cricket, but women’s tournaments are also going for hybrid hosting now. The upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup will follow a similar model — India will be the main host, but Pakistan’s matches will be played in Sri Lanka.

Same thing was done earlier in the Champions Trophy too. So this hybrid hosting thing is slowly becoming a common solution when countries can’t visit each other directly.

Final Thoughts

The big tournament, the Asia cup, is going to be scheduled in September. The matches will be played from September 5 to September 21 in T20I format. The dates still have to be confirmed, but the promotional activities and insider reports are indicating no change.

UAE is again stepping in as the neutral and trusted host. If all goes as expected, we might get to see two or even three India vs Pakistan matches within just two weeks — something every cricket lover dreams of.

So get ready — this September, Asia Cup 2025 might just bring back the energy and excitement we’ve all been missing.

First match on Sept 7. If both qualify, again on Sept 14 and also chances of a final too on Sept 21.

Because of issues between India and Pakistan, the UAE is chosen as a neutral ground.

Six teams: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and the UAE.
