Neymar and Al-Hilal Contract End: What Went Wrong?

Here’s a shocker (or maybe heartbreaking for some fans) news, Neymar Jr. and Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal have decided to end the contract. The club has informed via their social media post in which they thanked the Brazilian star footballer. They wished him good luck for his future.

Al-Hilal club had signed him in a massive $98 million in August 2023. Big money, huge expectations, but reality? Quite the opposite. Just two months in, during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay, Neymar tore his ACL and meniscus. Yeah, one of those dreaded injuries. The result? He was out for the entire 2023-24 season. For a player brought in as the face of the project, this was a massive blow.

In numbers, it’s even more brutal. Neymar was reportedly earning $3.1 million a week. Let that sink in for a second. Al-Hilal paid around $13 million for every game he played—just seven in total. Seven games, one goal, and three assists. That’s it. No wonder the club, understandably, started thinking, “Is this worth it?”

According to insiders, Al-Hilal had been considering this move for months. Neymar’s injury-prone record wasn’t doing them any favours. Even Saudi sports pundits chimed in, with one bluntly stating, “He’s brilliant, but his body’s unreliable. It’s draining Al-Hilal financially and technically.” Ouch, but fair.

Now, Neymar had a contract until 2025, but with this termination, he’s walking away from about $42 million in unpaid wages. Not exactly pocket change, huh? As for what’s next, it seems he’s heading back to Brazil. Rumours are flying about a deal with Santos, the club where it all began.

This whole situation highlights how unpredictable football is. Even after spending one can not avoid the injury and change the luck. The same happened with Neymar. Although he is still a global star, but the thing did not go well with Al-Hilal as the club and fans had expected. What happens next? Fans are eager to see if Neymar can rediscover his magic back home. If anyone can turn things around, it’s him.
