Gukesh Grabs Zagreb Rapid 2025 Title with Solid Performance

Indian chess player D Gukesh ended up winning the Rapid title at the SuperUnited tournament that’s been happening in Zagreb, Croatia. This one’s actually part of the Grand Chess Tour 2025. Gukesh scored 14 points out of 18, which, to be honest, is kind of a big deal considering how tough the event was.

The start of the tournament was not good for Gukesh. He has lost the first game to Jan-Krzysztof Duda from Poland. It was a long game which ended after 59 moves. However, he has come back again like a champion and won big matches. He grabbed wins against France’s Alireza Firouzja, India’s own Praggnanandhaa, and even beat Magnus Carlsen—who is still one of the top players in the chess world. The best thing was that he’d already beaten Carlsen just a month ago.

The final round of Gukesh was against Wesley from the US. He won this game easily in 36 moves and clinched the title of Zagreb Rapid 2025. In the tournament, he had won 6 games, lost 1 game and 2 ended in a draw.

Now, the blitz section of the tournament is going to start on Saturday and it will end on July 6. The final winner will be decided based on total points from both rapid and blitz formats. So basically, Gukesh is in a good place, but things can still change depending on how the blitz goes. This whole win just shows how good Gukesh has become and how Indian chess is moving up in the world of sports.
